Played at the Old County Ground,
Brentwood on Monday 27th August
In
contrast to 2006, Sun greeted the arrival of players and spectators at the
Old County Ground, Brentwood. The players went through their warm up
routines before Royston Smith elected to bat first on winning the toss.
Freddy Butt and Shaun McMurray made a good start but Freddy perished to a
fine catch to deep mid-on running back. An even better catch accounted for
Shaun leaving Ian Russell and Smudger to repair the damage. Both looked in
good form until Ian nicked one behind for 25. Jon Powell joined Smudger in a
vital stand and the Green skipper was dropped in the deep in the defining
moment of the game. Both players batted well against a good spin attack and
began to play more expansively when Royston perished for 65. JP contined to
play some good shots but wickets fell in quick succession as the innings
closed on 224 for 9 which was about 20 less than looked likely at one stage.
The spin attack seemed to hold the key but it was the opening attack of
James Wyatt and Ananda Krishnan who put Chingford on the back foot, bowling
with great control to put them behind the rate. A couple of chances were
spurned but a magnificent diving catch by Chris Cook at long on gave Green a
boost at a crucial stage. The Chingford innings fell away against the spin
of Ricky Gill (3-40), Shaun McMurray (3-46) and Chammy Mudalige (2-12).
Thus, Green retained the cup which was celebrated in traditional fashion by
the adoring AGWAGS.
