Sir Harold and
The Inspector got Green off to a fine start in the final of the Over 40s
indoor competition against Coggeshall at Chelmsford. With the retirement of
Clouseau the rate slowed with
Sir Harold who was somewhat starved of the
strike also retiring on 25. Gibbo perished first
ball and some lusty blows from Fat Cas
enabled him to become the 3rd player to retire.
The Pig and Bones upped the tempo with
some sensible running to make the score a respectable if not commanding
score of 116 for 3.
The Coggeshall openers worked the ball to the side walls to great effect.
The introduction of Gavin Castle induced a
false stroke but the simplest of chances was spilled. Sadly this was not the
last of the fielding blemishes. Keith Mitchell's
bowling tightened things and a breakthrough was made in somewhat fortuitous
manner with the ball rebounding from Gibbo's
pads back onto the stumps for a stumping. Green were back in the game at
this point but another simple dropped catch followed by four missed run out
chances saw the game slip away as a sense of panic seemed to set in. A late
gamble to use Bones for the penultimate
over did not come off and Coggeshall fittingly won with an overthrow with a
couple of balls and one wicket in hand.
Andy Flower presented the trophy to the worthy winners.
