Under 15s Upset
Favourites to Win Indoor Title
Green’s under 15’s got their forthcoming outdoor season off to a flying
start at The County Ground Chelmsford on Sunday with victory in the final of
the Essex Indoor Tournament over hot favourites Chelmsford.
Green had finished second to Chelmsford in the group stages of the
competition with victories over Hutton, Witham, Brentwood & Great Baddow
plus a thrilling tie with Kelvedon & Feering. The only blemish had been a
comprehensive defeat to Chelmsford who had finished with a 100% record. A
feature of the matches had been the batting of Thomas Oakley & Chris Haylett
who were well supported by Dalton Calcott, James Hewitt & Tom Farquharson.
With James Duhig bowling useful spells & Tom Greaves performing well behind
the stumps the path to the final had been very much a team effort as is so
often the case in the indoor form of the game.
With Greaves & Farquharson not available for the final manager Trevor Oakley
brought in Joe Bilton and not surprisingly Green found themselves in the
field. Another great team effort with two wickets for Oakley plus one each
for Bilton & Haylett backed up by two run out’s saw Chelmsford dismissed for
a below par 70 in eleven overs. Green were determined to get away to a fast
start and put pressure on the bowlers and Oakley & Bilton did just that with
20 from the first three overs before Bilton fell for 2. This let in Haylett
whose 7 in quick time allied to Oakley’s retirement for 27 took Green to the
50 mark helped by plenty of extras as the pressure took it’s toll on the
bowler’s. Any thought of a Chelmsford fight back was quickly extinguished by
Hewitt (12 n.o.) & Calcott (7 n.o.) as their determined running between the
wickets saw victory achieved by 4 wickets with nearly three overs to spare.

'B' Team Close With Matt Finish
The 'B' team finished their indoor campaign with a weak performance
against Navestock. Fat Cas was out to the 2nd
ball after which Potter,
Si Brown, Graham
Cook and Cockinson found various odd
ways of getting out without registering much on the board.
Clouseau took the score past 40 but his
innings did not include much fitness training.
The Navestock boys obviously don't enjoy walking holidays but a couple were
winkled out as they made heavy weather of the chase. The highlight of the
game was Matt Bull's efforts to play Clouseau,
missing by a country mile except off the final ball of the over when he
dollied one up. Congratulations to Navestock who may well be promoted
following this victory.

'B's Stay Put After
Shocking Display
The
'B' team were condemned to another season in division two after a poor
performance against Seven Kings. Wayward bowling allowed the Seven Kings
batsmen to score freely with only Thomas Oakley
bowling his two overs economically. The fielding was not much better with
Cockinson, after an early stumping, finding
little else staying in the gloves. Overthrows and missed run outs completed
a shoddy performance in the field.
Faced with a massive 136 to win, a becalmed Potter was outscored by
Thomas Oakley until the latter was run out
just one short of retirement. Graham Cook put
a bit of spirit into the batting with a couple of lusty blows but Green
finished well short.

Eddie Palmer
It is with great sadness that we report that Eddie Palmer died last
weekend.
A friendly and jovial man, Eddie played for Ardleigh Green from1959 until
1982 and was a member of the undefeated 3rd XI in 1975.
Eddie was a a hard-hitting batsman who hit enormous straight sixes in the
days before heavy bats. An underrated bowler, Eddie took 93 wickets and had
safe enough hands to pouch 113 catches.
In recent years Eddie was a frequent spectator at 1st XI games. He will be
missed greatly by all who knew him.

Smudger is MOM for the 2nd Time
Royston Smith seems to be playing in the
manner familiar to Ardleigh Green watchers on the Club Cricket Conference
toour to Dubai and Australia.
On the Dubai leg, Smudger scored just 7 in the opening game but seems to
have found his feet on reaching Australia. A run a ball 30 against
Kensington District was followed up by an all-round man of the match
performance against Hay CC where he took 3-39 in his 10 overs and followed
up with 22 in the run chase.
In the next game against Northern Districts, he was man of the match again
after scoring an undefeated 74 in the 6 wicket victory.

Rainham Run Out of Luck
The 'B' side thought that they had done a good job in restricting Rainham
to 60 all out in their latest indoor game at St. Edward's school. Although
the batsmen took a shine to the bowling of The
Inspector, Graham Cook,
Toast, Potter
and Alex Cason all bowled well to peg back a
fairly impressive start. Potter too, hit the
stumps direct to leave the batsman stranded by a few yards (close enough for
a dispute it would seem).
Green's batting was awful as they slumped to 3 for 3 with the ball being
dollied up at regular intervals to grateful fielders.
Graham Cook broke the shackles with a couple
of 6s of successive balls but perished attempting a third. This left the
unlikely pairing of Toast and
Cockinson with the task of knocking off the
remaining runs. Toast struck out but fell
with just over 20 required after which Cocko
took Green close with a couple of sixes which astounded the watching Whale.
With the target down to single figures, the man run out (still smarting from
the decision), gifted Green the game with a succession of no balls and wides.
