The Ardleigh Green Social
Calendar came to a conclusion with the annual presentation dinner and dance
at Maylands Golf Club. There were plenty of award winners on show but the
evening began with the most popular winner of all when Tony Cook won the
'Play Your Cards Right' jackpot. An air of confusion surrounded the starters
as a combination of avocado, mozzarella and tomatoes translated into avocado
with prawns, looking remarkably similar to the prawn cocktail. So confused
was Keith Mitchell that he ate both varieties of starter to see if he could
tell the difference between them. The catering staff were so confused that
those who ordered the chicken managed to finish their meal before those who
wanted salmon were served. It could be argued that they had to catch the
salmon but it would not explain why the vegetarian dish was served even
later. The fruits of the forest gateaux tasted remarkably like chocolate
cake but, by then, there was little element of surprise. Those who had
not heard Keith Mitchell speak before were pleasantly surprised by the
opportunity for 40 winks before the dancing started. Bones rattled off a
short history of the club despite some wicked heckling from Mrs Giles.
This did not dampen the spirits of the evening too much as the awards were
presented. Jon Powell's practice run at last year's function stood hem in
good stead as he picked up both the 1st XI batting award and the Ray Barker
memorial trophy as best all rounder. Mick Clarke won the 1st XI bowling
whilst Misbah Uddin took the the award for the 2nd XI. Fat cas won the 2nd
XI batting and earned the Hambleton Trophy for consecutive league hundreds.
Gerry Reardon took the 3rd XI batting whilst Lloyd Edwards took the bowling
award to add to the Pentridge Cup. Jon Bayfield and Dean Pruscino picked up
the 4th XI batting and bowling respectively. Chris Cook won the Pemberton
cup for the best player under 18 and The Trolley won the Lang cup as club
man of the year. Lloyd Edwards was presented with the match ball with which
he took five wickets in 5 balls.
